The Organ Trail is pretty funny retro style game based on the edutainment game The Oregon Trail. Some of you will be discouraged to play the game because of the graphics, but for me, being a 80’s kid growing up with my Nintendo 8-bit I can really appreciate these retro graphics. I came across this game on Steam, but it’s also available on iOS, Android, Linux and OS X. Since this is one of those games you can play verry well on your tablet or phone I bought it for my Ipad. Apparently the game initially was released as a free Flash browser game, and later on further developed into a expanded version.
PlotThe game starts out in a post (zombie) apocalyptic America while our main character is being attacked by zombies. After shooting a few zombies you will run out of ammo, luckily a mysterious stranger saves your live and together you travel to D.C. to save your friends.
After you savior has been bitten by a zombie you find yourself on the road with four friends heading for the west coast of America in order to reach a safe haven free of zombies. Players must manage their limited resources, including food, ammunition and fuel for their vehicle, in order to complete their journey and keep everyone in their party alive and healthy.
GameplayI only played the iPad version, and at first the fighting sequence controls might be a bit annoying. So when you start playing just go scavenge during the day when there are not to many zombies in the area to get a feel for the controls. You can play the game on four different difficulty modes, I started playing on easy mode just to get a feeling for the controls, the fighting sequence controls can be a bit annoying in the beginning. In the game you will find yourself driving on the road from place to place. On the road there are random incidents flashing up, from finding some supplies in a abandoned vehicle to one of your group getting bitten by a zombie (Doh!!) In towns you can do some trading, take jobs and upgrade and repair your car. Repairing and upgrading your car is essential to the game, next to having fuel and medkits, so always keep some spare tires, batteries and mufflers in reserve.
Along the road you will find yourself playing a lot of mini-games like scavenging, getting rid of a gang of bikers chasing you (on Easy mode to easy!) and a lot more. I finally made it to New Haven with three survivors left, one was already bitten in the beginning of the game so I had to shoot him. The other one was taking taking hostage.. I had one bullet to save him from the guy that took him hostage, but still getting a feeling for the controls, I aimed to high with the result of losing another survivor (Doh again!!)
At first you might think you don’t need all those other survivors, since they only thing they do is eat your food.. But when you finally arrive at New Haven you will appreciate them a lot more, trust me! So don’t go shooting all of them right away, of course you have to when they are bitten. The game only costs about 3 dollar, a really fair price for a game you will be playing for hours before you finish it.
